Flood Cup

Results:

Ray Adams 1 Greg Colwell 0

Kieran Lyons v Mark Taylor (Round 6) – postponed to Jun 19

Russell Lyons 0 James Hiller 1 (Round 6)

James won his first game in the Flood Cup at his forty-first attempt with an astonishing win. Russell has been in form and often profited from adventurous play. However his overly attacking play led to a calamitous situation, especially when his one out queen attack made one check too many and was trapped in the corner. A needless knight sacrifice the next moved cemented James’ huge advantage. James was then able to go straight for the checkmate ensuring Russell didn’t have time to regroup his diminished forces. This result throws the Handicap competition wide open.

Ray ground down Greg in the other game, with Greg slipping up just before midnight in a closely fought endgame that might otherwise have headed for a draw.

Tonight’s results reduce the list of the possible winners of the 2009 Flood Cup to three and the Handicap Trophy to six.

Quote of the night

“Even an average player like me can win when given that many pieces” – James redefines the word ‘average’.
