Flood Cup

Round 3 results:

Russell Lyons 1 Brian Willcock 0

Gary Sands 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Nathan Shaw ½ Kieran Lyons ½

James Hiller 0 Ray Adams 1

Greg Colwell 0 Mark Taylor 1

The main clash was between Nathan and Kieran, with Nathan meekly giving away the exchange by move ten, but fortunately coming out of it with the benefit of two pawns and Kieran’s inability to castle. While Kieran had some degree of counter-play with a forward queen, Nathan had most of the play and a key queen move that would have restricted Kieran’s queen was missed. After this a repetition became evident, and Kieran’s draw offer was accepted.

Russell’s game was the first of the night to finish, Brian obviously unsettled by lunchtime rumour of the Roar’s demise.

Gary pressed strongly without making extraordinary moves until at move 16 he overlooked a bishop check on his king that resulted in the loss of a rook and a pawn and his positional advantage. After this his game collapsed totally five moves later.

Greg was a pawn up early on his game, but overlooked a dangerous pin that cost him a piece. Mark successfully exchanged down to a pawn endgame with his surviving bishop calling the shots for a straightforward win.

James played solidly during the opening, but made a critical error that cost him a bishop which proved fatal to his chances.
