Flood Cup

Round 2 results:

Brian Willcock 1 Greg Colwell 0

Mark Taylor v James Hiller – postponed to March 27

Ray Adams 1 Nathan Shaw 0

Kieran Lyons 1 Gary Sands 0

Andrew Robinson ½ Russell Lyons ½

The main game saw Flood Cup aspirants Ray and Nathan slog it out in a game that was last to finish on the night (but still complete by 11pm, so not one of the all-time great marathons). As is often this case in games involving Ray, the game was heading towards a drawish endgame, and after the game Greg was able to demonstrate how Nathan could have achieved his draw. However a few inaccuracies saw Ray get his king into pole position to shepherd his pawn to queendom and achieve victory.

Andrew’s game with Russell saw many vicissitudes of fortune, until entering the endgame Andrew had a pawn advantage. With a rook each still on the board, Andrew exchanged pawns down to a position where he thought he would be able to press for victory. However Russell had every possibility covered and a draw became inevitable, and was agreed to.

The two other games were won by Kieran and Brian.
