The night started with Nathan surprisingly winning both games against Kieran to remove any chance she had of winning the tournament. Nathan ensured that he will finish in the top four by sharing the spoils with Russell.

Andrew won the first game after Tony with white took an opportunity to win the exchange but in doing so allowed Andrew to control the centre. The position was as follows: {W: Kc1 Qd8 Rh1 Nc3 a3 b2 f2 g2 h4; B: Kh7 Qe5 Bf5 Ne4 a7 b7 c7 f7 g7 h6}. The game continued: 1 Ne2 Qc5+, 2 Kd1 Nxf2, 3 Ke1 Nxh1, 4 g4 Bxg4, 5 Qd3+ Bf5, 6 Qf3 Qe5, Qxh1 Bd3 0-1.

Tony won the second game after Andrew sacrificed a bishop for three pawns early on, and had strong chances but played inaccurately in time trouble, hastily sacrificing a rook for a bishop which made Tony’s job at the end very easyr.

Brian and Kieran somehow did not realise that they had already played in the tournament a few weeks ago, and played their games again. Brian won the second game to achieve a 1-1 score line, an improvement on the original. A pity for him that it didn’t count!
