A very threatening but ultimately impotent evening thunderstorm seemed to scare away potential attendees, so only five players came to chess tonight.

Brian won his first game easily enough after a close middle game, however the second game ended very abruptly when Josh move his bishop from c4 to e6. The final position was:

W: Ke1 Qg8 Ra1 Rha Bc1 Be6 Nb1 Nb8 a2 b2 c2 d2 f2 g2 h2

B: Kd7 Qc6 Ra8 Bc8 Be7 Nb8 Ne4 a7 b7 c7 d6 g6.

Brian’s second game with Andrew was notable for a rook move from d2 to f3. If it went unnoticed that this move transgressed the rules of chess, then Andrew’s position would have quickly been routed. Instead, it resulted in an exchange of queens and an inexorable grounding out of a win in a rook and pawn endgame.

Quote of the night

“I wish I could say I did it deliberately, but I didn’t” – Brian, commenting on the illegal move that almost won him the game.

“I had a splitting headache, I’ve got a bad dose of the flu, and I was distracted by the noise from the disco next door” – Brian, trying to explain away his being prematurely checkmated by Josh (no medical symptoms were evident to onlookers and the disco has been quiet since last Friday night)

“He didn’t even offer me a blunder” – Peter

“I did!” – an indignant Brian
