Tony Howes retained the SW Trophy on a dramatic final night of play. Kieran sacrificed a piece which turned out to be unsound. It had been expected that Brendan would win to force a play-off for first place. However he got the worst of his game with Garvin and appeared to have draw prospects at best. Then an unfortunate touch move indiscretion (followed by the trademark nervous cackle) resulted in the loss of a bishop and the game ended with Garvin having two more queens of the board than Brendan.
Andrew played out another draw with Nathan with an eye to the Best-Allrounder Trophy standing in mind. He also achieved an undefeated year, although it’s dubious whether two wins, eleven draws and 49 lost rating points is an achievement!
Nathan however reached 4.5 points in the tournament, thus achieving second place in the tournament and the right to play-off with Brendan for the Maiden Trophy. Quiet an achievement!
In other action Greg and Russell battled out another draw, while Brian condemned Josh to last place. Brian also reached four points, and his late ascendency was likened to the Olympic cycling where a cyclist does no work at the back of the peleton and then comes forward only in the sprint to the finish.
Brian’s comment on his game: you have my permission to comment on my game with Josh that he threw away a possible victory by a premature resignation.
