Report – 8 August 2008

Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results (Round 6):

Brendan Griffen 0 Kieran Lyons 1

Tony Howes ½ Andrew Robinson ½

Nathan Shaw v Greg Colwell – postponed to August 15

Peter Ford 0 Brian Willcock 1

John Roper 0 Garvin Gray 1

Russell Lyons 1 Josh Ford 0

The top board was the only game to go the distance with Brendan losing on time in a game that Kieran had a slight edge in the end game, but inaccurate play almost led to a draw. Tony and Andrew’s game was an early draw with both players having more than 30 minutes of time left.

Peter was a piece up at one stage, but he missed a killer response to a pin that resulted in an easy victory for Brian.

Russell’s game with Josh was all over within 15 minutes.

Brian has provided two ‘reports’ on his game:

(1): Peter and I have sworn a sacred oath not to reveal the justly hidden horrors of our game.

(2): Actually with regard to the game against Russell I was not relieved by the offer of a draw – I had two passed pawns on one wing and he had one on the other with the Kings reduced to the role of policemen to keep them in order. It seemed to me, and I believe Russell, that it was a dead draw. Expect a letter from James.

And the reports just keep rolling in…

(3): am conferring with my legal advice re your actionable reporting of my comments and attempt to represent me as a doddering senile apology for a chess player. Please note that my two reported comments referred to two different games.

It would be pistols at dawn were I capable of getting up at that hour.

Quote of the night

“That’s the most insipid game I’ve played this year” – Tony Howes

“I’m not eccentric enough to be good at chess” – Peter Ford

“Our game mainly consisted of queenly moves” – Peter’s next statement, disproving his previous one
