Peter was the club’s roving reporting and provided the following despatch:

Kieran had a comfortable win against Josh and their match was the first to finish. Josh, BJ and Kieran then enjoyed some social chess while the remaining games continued.  Mark also popped in as did Garvin but didn't stay to play.

I'm sure Greg would agree that he wasn't at his best tonight as he had a lot on his plate.... not the least of which was a 05:30 start at Mudgeeraba and 96 kilometres of bushwalking in front of him - given the enormity Greg's weekend commitments, I offered to postpone the match until (immediately) after his walk... he declined and we pressed on.

I felt the opening went well for me for the most part and it seemed I was a move or two ahead for the most part.  I managed to be up a pawn and thought I had a reasonable position (apart from locking my Queen up a tad.... that is until it all turned to custard on move 25.

I was blinded by what I thought was a mate attack and inexplicably hung a rook right under the nose of Greg's King.  Greg's good nature shone through and he offered me the compliment of thinking this was an elaborate trap... I wish that was the case but alas, it was in fact, nothing but a soul destroying blunder.

Greg was kind enough to offer up his only meaningful error of the game on move 28 with Re8 but instead of exchanging rooks which could / should have led to 29.Rxe8 Rxe8 30.Qxa7 Qh5 31.Qxb6+ Ke7 32.h4 Kf8 33.Qf6 Qd1+ 34.Kg2 Qxc2+ 35.Kh3 Qxd3 36.Qh8+ Ke7 37.Qe5+ Kd7 38.Qd5+ Kc8 39.Qxc5+ Kd7 (which would have evened things up a little) I instead moved into a forced mate position with the feeble response of 29. Rf1.  From there it was all downhill.

Nonetheless, it was a deserved win to Greg.  Greg offered many tips post-mortem - not the least of which was the value of pushing pawns to clear files.

The third match of the night saw Russell win on time against John.
