Report – 11 July 2008

Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results (Round 4):

Brendan Griffen v Tony Howes – postponed to July 25 or August 1

Peter Ford v Greg Colwell – postponed to July 18

Garvin Gray 0 Nathan Shaw 1

Brian Willcock ½ Andrew Robinson ½

Kieran Lyons v Josh Ford – postponed to July 18

Russell Lyons v John Roper – postponed to July 18

Only two games were played on what must have been the coldest Friday night of the year so far, with the heater turned on to its highest setting. Tony showed up expecting to play Brendan, due to a misunderstanding for which the DOP must bear some responsibility, so this game will be played on either July 25 or August 1 with both players awarded a putative half point for the sake of the Round 5 draw. Mark Taylor also was in attendance but didn’t stay too late in the frigid conditions. Other than this only the four players with tournament games showed up.

In action over the board, Nathan won to press his claim for a top three finish, while Andrew claimed his tenth consecutive draw with Brian having a slight advantage in a double rook endgame that he was unwilling to pursue.

Quote of the night

“A sure way to put me off my game is to talk to me about Doctor Who when I’m in time trouble” – Andrew unwittingly creating a pun while talking to convert Mark and sceptic Nathan.

“No, he isn’t my friend” – Garvin providing illuminations on some of the vagaries of Facebook…
