The board one clash saw Tony edge closer to a first Flood Cup triumph with a draw that puts him half a point clear with a round to go. His final game with Kieran will determine the destiny of the Flood Cup for 2008. Tony played the Budapest and had a slight advantage for much of the game, but had to defend sharply near the end to achieve a draw by consent in an opposite bishop endgame. One record was equalled and another was exceeded in this match. Andrew achieved his fourth draw of the tournament equalling the club record for draws in a seven round Swiss. Tony spent 31 minutes thinking time on his 21st move, beating the previous record of 29 minutes Mark Winn spent on his 15th move in a Round 7 Flood Cup match with Andrew.
Brian’s game was the first of the night to be resolved and continued a wretched run for him. Ray exploited the fact that Brian had not castled, and resultant material loss forced an early resignation.
Peter could have won the Handicap Trophy with a round to spare in his game with Brendan. Brendan managed to snatch most of Peter’s queenside pawns with a rampaging queen to set up a straightforward endgame victory.
While the Flood Cup game comes down to a Grand Final of sorts between Tony and Kieran, the Handicap Trophy is (as usual) more complicated in its permutations. Peter has destiny in his own hands, while Greg and John have a chance if he slips, and Nathan has an outside chance at claiming a joint victory with Peter if all of the results go his way. Andrew and Brian will fight it out with the expelled James for the right to stir the pot with the Handicap wooden spoon.
