Flood Cup

Results:

Kieran Lyons 0 Andrew Robinson 1 (on forfeit)

Greg Colwell 1 Russell Lyons 0

Nick Kospartov 1 James Hiller 0 (on forfeit)

Unfortunately two games were decided by forfeit, with Kieran and James unable to attend.

In the other game Greg was fortunate to come away with a win, and he demonstrated to Russell after the game a series of straightforward moves that led to a queened pawn and victory. After this chance Russell had a bishop and two knights against a queen, however a lack of co-ordination between black’s pieces resulted in white’s queen picking off the pieces one by one on an open board.

Junior tournament

A quick round-robin tournament was organised for the large junior contingent in attendance tonight. Every player won a game, and Jonathan Bester managed to win all of his games. The results tonight were quite different to those of the last junior tournament run on 23 Novermber 2007.

Quote of the night

“He must have great powers of observation to pick the inferiority of my endgame over the other parts of my game” – Brian, commenting on Brendan’s assertion in last week’s news column: “by now I knew endgame wasn't his strongest area”.
