The thirtieth tournament for the Flood Cup kicked off tonight with no upsets but plenty of strong resistance. All of the six games were played in Room B7 which ensured a good tournament atmosphere. The only incident requiring the arbiter occurred when Greg started writing down a few scenarios to decide his next move. A quick word from Andrew alerted him that this was contrary to the laws of chess, something that Greg was unaware of.

Nathan thanked Andrew for the draw at the commencement of play (he should have thanked the Swissperfect program). This negative attitude possibly helped make this one of the earliest finishing games. Greg was easily holding his own until he miscalculated an exchange and conceded a knight for a pawn. Greg battled on bravely with one knight against two, but Andrew’s experience meant he was never going to lose from this position.

Kieran gained a pawn early with a bishop sac on f7 regaining a piece. Mark’s audible sigh indicated he had not anticipated this and the game finished somewhat early. So Kieran gained a measure of revenge for her upset loss in the final round of the 2007 Hour tournament.

The most interesting and longest game of the evening saw an asymmetrical endgame with John having a queen and four passed pawns against a rook, bishop, knight and two pawns. John even had two queens on the board and still managed to lose, possibly due to fatigue caused by the late finish.

Josh pushed Russell all the way to the endgame which saw Russell only come out in front by a couple of pawns. Peter played well but always seemed to be slightly behind against Garvin. After the game Garvin demonstrated to Peter that while none of his moves were fatal, there were four or five that were weakening and contributed to the final result.

Next Friday will see the annual St David’s Day tournament played. The following Friday is the catch-up week, with the Flood Cup resuming on Friday March 14.

Handicap Trophy

The Handicap trophy runs in conjunction with the Flood Cup.

The player with the highest "Handicap Total" wins the Handicap Trophy.

The "Handicap Total" is obtained by adding the Handicap (column one above) to the player's points gained in the Flood Cup.

Handicaps are calculated at: [(1567 minus rating) divided by 160].

To avoid statistical distortions, James Hiller has 300 points and John Roper 100 points added to his actual rating for handicap purposes only.  Peter Ford, Josh Ford and Brendan Griffen have been given provisional ratings for handicap purposes only.
