Tonight saw an increased attendance with all eleven entrants in the 45 Minute tournament present plus several others including Mark, his son Matthew, four new people to the club (one senior, two juniors + father), and Alex Toolsie and Cameron De Vere.

The shock of the tournament occurred early in the night when Brian overlooked a simple back row mate to give Peter his first tournament win at the club. Thomas acted on his father’s advice (for a change) and played slowly at first to gain a positional advantage in the opening. Then old habits returned and he lost a piece and eventually the game with a hasty careless move. Russell was in a very generous mood and gifted Andrew a queen and a piece in a game that finished earlier than Kieran against Josh.

Andrew won against Brain after the latter swapped off pieces and ended up two pawns down in a rook endgame, with Andrew’s rook on the seventh rank. Greg was a pawn up in a two rook ending against Ray but somehow contrived to lose from this situation. Thomas missed a one move mate but with Q+R+N v Q it only forestalled the inevitable.

Late into the night transfer chess was played with Peter and Josh mainly having the better of Thomas and Cameron. Meanwhile, Ray and Nathan played chess at what Ray termed “a more dignified pace”.

Quote of the night

“Be very careful what you say. BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY.” – Mark’s warning to Peter.

“Kieran just got over the line against Josh”, said Andrew to Russell.

“I DID NOT JUST GET OVER THE LINE”, interrupted an indignant Olympian
