Tony may top the table for now, but he may live to rue the draw-ish lines that allowed Ray to gleefully snatch half a point off him. Ray said after the game that the game was always heading for a draw. Now Tony will have to hope that Kieran slips up next week against Mark. Kieran had a quick win against her father with the game over in 30 minutes. Early on Russell had allowed a knight fork on f7 that won the exchange, and the game swiftly deteriorated from there. Kieran has the chance of becoming the first female winner of one of the club’s big four tournaments next week.
Greg played solidly and showed how far he has progressed as a chess player over the past twelve months by achieving a draw against Andrew. Greg had most of the play and it was only by three-fold repetition at the end that Andrew held on for a draw.
If this was the AFL, Mark and John would both have been playing to lose. However with no first draft picks for next season on offer the game was decided on merit with Mark pulling off a convincing win. Mark victory was even more meritorious considering the very strenuous week just past for him.
