One Hour / Maiden Trophy
Round 5 result:
Tony Howes 1 Mark Taylor 0
Tonight’s report comes courtesy of Tony Howes:
A select group braved the weather for Friday night's chess. No quotes for the night, although when I mentioned to Ray that Damian Norris presently has the 2nd highest FIDE rating for a Fiji based active player, he replied with the years of his losses to Damian and the opening variation which was played. There may have been a real quote, but Mark and I were too immersed in our game.
Our game was very interesting - a queen's gambit where Mark's white squared bishop came alive quite spectacularly, first from b7 then from a6. Mark eventually won a pawn, but in a 2xR+N minor endgame his knight on h3 which initially contained the king became a liability, and I eventually came out the best from an endgame combination, with both of us getting short of time.
