Ray Adams 0 Brian Willcock 1

Kieran Lyons 1 John Curran 0

There were two upsets tonight. One was the greatest win of a player’s so-far short career, while the other affects the positions at the top of the standings.

Greg won his game brilliantly by executing a queen takes knight move with recapture from a knight fork that pushed him into the endgame with a winning advantage of two pawns. Garvin was lost for words after the game, but not so the other players still at the club at that late hour who now fully realise that a win over Greg can never be taken for granted.

Brian managed to reach a rook against bishop endgame with a pawn advantage, and while Ray fought valiantly till the end, it was never a game he was going to get a result from against somebody of Brian’s experience.

Mark advised that he was unable to attend tonight for family reasons and agreed to concede his game to Greg as there would otherwise be re-scheduling issues.

Andrew maintained his momentum with a win over Russell. The turning point in the game occurred when Russell overlooked a knight fork on e6 that won the exchange. Russell still battled on and Andrew had to be very watchful against an opponent who nearly won the exchange back and certainly had some momentum until Andrew managed to exchange down to a simple win in the endgame.

Tony and Kieran both won their game early on in the night to maintain their chances of winning the tournament.
