Who says white has the advantage? Black had a clean sweep on the coldest night of the year so far.
Russell lost his perfect score when he lost to Tony. At one stage it seemed that Russell might be able to win as he had four pawns compensation for a bishop, however Tony was able to queen a pawn near the end which ensured victory.
Brian and Greg had a see-sawing game. The see-saw almost fell off its axis when Brian missed a mate in two. Things got much worse for Brian because punishment for his oversight was the loss of a rook, and after this the slow progression to mate was sheer torture for Brian, but no doubt tinged with plenty of enjoyment for Greg! Reconstructing the game afterwards provided endless entertainment for other club members!
Mark had played a round of golf and had a few rum and cokes in his preparation for today’s game. A bishop lost at move 12 with no compensation indicated that perhaps Mark had over-prepared for the game.
Ray won his game with a rook-side pawn in a five pawn endgame, while Nathan lost in an otherwise even game with Kieran.

Quote of the night
“Next week I’ve got Russell. Then I’m going to have my behind whooped by Tony” – Nathan (disclaimer: The Gap Chess Club does not endorse these sorts of activities, even for players in their first year at the club).
