Garvin Gray v Tony Howes postponed to July 27

Tonight was another very cold winter’s night which meant only those with games bothered to make the effort to leave their warm houses to come to the club, with the honourable exception of John Curran.

Nathan and Ray both seemed satisfied with a draw in their game, although it was well fought and the game was a conclusive draw with only pawns on the board at the end of hostilities.

Kieran capitalised on Greg’s inexperience with the Sicilian Defence – the first time he played it – by positioning her pieces well to restrict Greg’s options. Greg held on, but at the cost of a few pawns which proved vital at the end.

Andrew had a relatively straightforward victory after Brian became a trifle over-adventurous with a knight which was trapped and forced to exchange for a pawn. This caused the strange sight of tripled pawns down the centre for Andrew, but this was not nearly enough compensation for the knight.

Russell managed to edge ahead of Mark to the point where he was a whole piece up in the endgame. Mark was in desperate time trouble, while Russell had over 25 minutes left – at one stage it was 26 minutes versus 26 seconds! Mark stopped recording, and Russell did likewise. After the game it transpired that both players were unaware that a player must keep recording, even if his opponent is freed of the obligation after going under five minutes (article 8.4 Laws of Chess 2005).

Cameron De Vere withdrew from the tournament on 30 June 2007 due to new work commitments which prevent him from playing on Friday nights for the foreseeable future. His games are removed from the calculation of the final standings, and each player will now have a bye in future rounds in which they would otherwise have played Cameron.
