One Hour / Maiden Trophy

Round 2 results:

Nathan Shaw 1 Greg Colwell 0

Ray Adams v Cameron De Vere – postponed

Kieran Lyons 0 Andrew Robinson 1

John Curran 0 Tony Howes 1

Brian Willcock 0 Russell Lyons 1

Garvin Gray 1 Mark Taylor 0

There were no big upsets tonight, although Brian’s quick loss to Russell was something of an upset considering Brian’s Flood Cup form. Brian blamed Andrew and Mark for being part of a conspiracy to deprive him of match play. This theory is, of course, thoroughly without basis.

Nathan recorded his first win at the club in a tournament game against Greg whose problems started at move 5 when he overlooked the simple capture of the e4 pawn by black. From here the game was difficult for white, and made more difficult when he was unable to castle kingside. Greg played consistently and methodically to notch up a win.

Kieran displayed all of her Olympian prowess to gain a commanding position with white against a Sicilian with b6. At the critical juncture of the game Andrew grabbed the h7 pawn then was able to employ a QxN capture followed by a knight fork check to exchange queens and force white into a quickly deteriorating position.

Tony was able to notch his first win of the tournament with a regulation win over John Curran while Garvin did likewise in a close game with Mark – although Mark said his own chances were few and far between.
