Brian played his usual robust opening with a hint of his unpredictable flair: 1 d4 d5, 2 c4 c5. After this the game settled down and with a well-placed central knight on e5 Brian seemed to be ready to take control of the game. However an unexpected 12 Ne6 resulted in the loss of the e5 knight and doubled pawns at e6 and e7 which blocked in the bishop at f8. Again however Brian managed a counter-attack focussed this time on white’s weak f3 pawn. Andrew managed to extricate himself out of this with a series of six forced moves that resulted in Brian losing a bishop. As usual Andrew dithered with the advantage and almost allowed Brian a checkmating attack. To forestall the checkmate a bishop was sacrificed and Brian was just about to gain parity when he committed a colossal blunder that lost a rook, the game, and the Flood Cup…. and the Handicap Trophy, and possibly the BAR Trophy. A harsh price to pay for a blunder….

As a surprising postscript to the game, it appears Brian was unaware of the importance of the game in the context of the tournament, and was thus unaware that he could have allayed his normally risky cutting-edge style and played more sedately towards a draw at certain crucial parts of the game. Brian’s win would have been popular at the club, and it was a pity it did not come to pass…

The other game between Ray and Mark lasted late into the night. The endgame saw Ray with an extra passed pawn and it was really only a matter of waiting until Ray decided on which way he was going to win. This rounded off an unlucky tournament for Mark who had a rough ride in the draw and finished with two wins (the same over the board as Tony who came second!) and five losses.

Quote of the night

“Must be the onset of early senility” – Brian after his game tonight when he realised that a draw would have won him the Flood Cup – he had somehow misread the table and thought a win was needed to get him into a play-off for first.
