The game that had the most effect on the final outcome of the Flood Cup saw Andrew very lucky to survive against Mark after missing a deadly discovered check at move 18. Mark had an overwhelming position and was within an inch of forcing checkmate but couldn’t find the right combination which gave an experienced opponent a lifeline which was exploited. The game that most affected the final outcome of the Handicap Trophy was a rather different affair. Cameron surged to the top of the Handicap standings after victory against Garvin. The final times on the clock said it all: Garvin over 1 hour 30; Cameron 13 minutes.
The other game that affected the Handicap was the Curran-Markson clash. In the end the result suited neither party. John needed a win to have a chance of avoiding the wooden spoon. A win to Ellis would have propelled him to the top of the Handicap Trophy standings. The game finished early, so maybe chances were missed on both sides.
Greg continued his good form to finish with a respectable 3.5 points in his first Flood Cup. The other game remained unplayed as Ernie did not appear for the second week running, adding another curious footnote to an already curious tournament. If you ask why it is curious, then think of the last time two players who lost in Round One were left to fight out the tournament’s deciding match in the final round!
