With a few players unavailable, attendance was slight tonight with only the six players involved in competition, plus Mark and Ernie in attendance. Andrew’s son Thomas was also dragged along, and managed to hold Ernie to a draw, but was content to read Kafka and play on his game-boy for most of the session.

At the start of the year most people thought that “Brian” would most likely win the Flood Cup. When Brian Thomas chose not to enter the tournament this assertion was drastically revised. Now it seems that a further revision is required after Brian Willcock’s quick and straightforward victory over an imploding Ray Adams. Ray was a pawn up in a two rook endgame, but played a few unconvincing moves that left him in a perilous position. The pressure caused Ray to leave a rook en pris and resignation followed. Ray even withdrew from the tournament but the following day agreed to stay in the draw to maintain an even number of players. Brian will win the Flood Cup for the first time if he wins his Round 7 game. A draw will see into a play-off at the very least, but may be enough for victory depending on other results.

In other games, Andrew finally broke his hoodoo against Tony to notch a win that keeps him in the running for a fifth Flood Cup title. Tony missed a few opportunities later in the game, but admitted at the outset that he has difficulties with fatigue and concentration after 10pm, and his last three games have gone past midnight. Tonight’s game finished at 11:40pm and there seems to be a general consensus around the club (including Ray) that shorter time controls are more appropriate for the Flood Cup. This issue will be addressed at the AGM in December, subject to proposals made by members.

Greg managed to “avoid the wooden spoon” (Greg’s words) with victory against John. John played an unorthodox opening that left his king unable to castle. Further moves from John that attempted to save material at the cost of position ensured that Greg was dominant throughout the game and had an easy win.
