Odd Knights Tournament

Results:

John Roper ½ Andrew Robinson ½

John Curran 0 Ellis Markson 1

Two games were played tonight. Andrew gave his worst opening performance ever in a long game and ended a rook down and with his king uncastled on f8. From here John battled to maintain his material advantage rather than exploiting his positional advantage with more direct play that would have reaped better rewards. In the end Andrew was able to escape and force a draw on three-fold repetition. No doubt the fact that John had less than a minute on his clock contributed to his glee in accepting the draw as fact.

John played his normal solid game but succumbed to the superior technique of Ellis in their clash.

Quote of the night

“During the 1950s I played chess with many White Russians in the Gambit Tearooms of Cannon Street in London. They were a sad lot, what with having to leave their homeland like that. They liked to play chess with material odds, and for money, and were experts at contriving draws from totally lost situations” – John Roper (the same could be said of his game tonight!).
