45 Minute Tournament

Results of Group Matches:

Ray Adams 0 Ellis Markson 1

Greg Colwell 1 Mark Taylor 0

Ellis Markson 0 Brian Willcock 1

Play-off for First Place:

Andrew Robinson 0 Brian Thomas 1

As the group winners were decided last week, the final was able to take place tonight. Andrew won the toss for colour selection and with white was able to build up an opening advantage with 1 d4 Nf6; 2 c4 c5; 3 e5 b5; 4 cxb5 a6; 5 e3 axb5; 6 Bxb5 Qa5+; 7 Nc3 g6; 8 Qa4 Bb7; 9 Qxa5 Rxa5; 10 Bc4 Bg7; 11 Bd2 etc. Then as so often happen, Brian clawed his way back into the game playing accurately and seizing every opportunity. With the position at {W: Kh1 Re1 Rd4 h2 Ne4; B: Kg8 Rb3 Rg2 Nf4 e6 f7 g6 h7} Brian spent five minutes on his move but still missed the forced mate of Rh3 threatening Rhxh2#. Even an oversight that lost Brian his knight did not present enough oxygen for Andrew to get back into the game, and so Brian wins this tournament for the first time.

In other games Ellis played well to overcome Ray but lost his chance to grab second place in the game with Brian the elder. Greg played well throughout to attain a good solid victory over Mark and boost his position in the Group B rankings.
