Maiden Tournament Play-off for First

Play-off result:

Cameron De Vere 1 Marty Chadwick 0 (on forfeit)

Marty forfeited this game citing chess fatigue as the main reason. Therefore Cameron claims the Maiden Trophy and becomes the 19th name to be inscribed on the trophy which has been awarded since 1986.

This week was really a breather between tournaments but the eight players who showed up were allowed to play some advance games. Former TGCC player Barry Cox made a cameo appearance, and reminisced on days gone by and some of the more colourful players of the past.

Garvin and Mark kicked up the new tournament with Garvin winning with white. Andrew and Brian’s games went to form, although Ray was a bit flummoxed when informed that his opponent would be awarded two minutes when Ray had made an illegal move whilst in check. Ray soon settled down and accepted the decision.

The second game between Cameron and Tim produced the most unusual twists of any game on the night (or most other nights!). As the game approached endgame Cameron’s flag fell, but inexperienced Tim who noticed the flag had fallen was unsure of what to do. Cameron played on unaware that now his flag had fallen he would not receive the increment. Tim said he asked for advice but the two spectators and Cameron said they either did not hear or understand this. The clock was facing away from the spectators so they were unaware that the flag had fallen. To win on time in this tournament Tim would have to claim it (according to articles B7 and B8 of the Rapidplay rules). Then Tim made an illegal move and one of the spectators took it upon himself to add two minutes to Cameron’s time, despite Cameron not making a claim to the arbiter, and (following the spectator interference) despite Cameron asking for the time not to be added. The game continued as a close tussle with Tim having chances but eventually succumbing to checkmate. Following the conclusion of the game Cameron offered a draw to Tim which Tim accepted. However the same spectator who had previously intervened said that the game was finished and the result could not be altered. The arbiter was unfortunately absent and unaware of all that had preceded. When he was brought up to speed by both players with what had occurred he asked the players what result they wanted and they both said they wanted a draw. Article 8.7 of The FIDE Laws of Chess (2005) states that: “At the conclusion of the game both players shall sign both scoresheets, indicating the result of the game. Even if incorrect, this result shall stand, unless the arbiter decides otherwise”. There are no scoresheets in this tournament, however if the players had been required to sign scoresheets they would undoubtedly have agreed the result to be a draw. This fact, coupled with the discretion given to the arbiter under article 8.7 gives ample justification for the arbiter determining that the result of this game is a draw.

Garvin and Cameron played two one-sided game, with Garvin winning the first and Cameron the second.

Quote of the night

A few quotes from Barry Cox:

“I can play the first six or seven moves but after that I can’t see things”.

“Ray and I have never liked fast games”.

“When I gave up chess tournament about ten years ago my rating was in the 1600s, but I was really playing at 1200”.
