Report – 18 August 2006

One Hour/Maiden Tournament

Round 6 results:

Brian Thomas 1 Tony Howes 0

Andrew Robinson ½ Marty Chadwick ½

Cameron De Vere ½ Debbie Jenkins ½

Ray Adams 1 John Curran 0

Garvin Gray 1 Greg Colwell 0 (played 11 August)

Gordon Powell 1 Ellis Markson 0 (on forfeit)

Shane Martin 0 Mark Taylor 1

Tom Szekely 1 Tim Johnson 0

Tonight’s results leave Brian a point clear with one round left to be played.

Marty and Cameron are level in the chase for the Maiden Trophy, and their Round 7 clash which determine the winner.

Tony reported that his contest with Brian was a scrappy game. His account goes as follows:

Tony also said that the bit that he played a bit worse in was worse than the part in which Brian played a bit worse in. Stated more simply, Tony felt this game was similar in many ways to his 2005 Flood Cup game with Andrew.

Marty accepted a draw in what Andrew and other observers thought was a clearly winning position for Marty. Earlier Andrew had applied a lot of pressure which he finally had to accept being only the exchange up as a reward. Then Marty was able to fight back assisted by unusually incompetent endplay chess from Andrew that seemed to have derived from J Hiller’s handbook.

In other games Cameron gained an important draw against a medically unfit Debbie to keep his Maiden Trophy hopes alive. Ray beat John as per the form book while Mark beat Shane in a pairing that always sees a close battle. Tom defeated Tim on Board 8 leaving Tim at the bottom of the pile with a round to go (if the ejected Hillers are excluded).

Quote of the night

“After Tuesday night, now it’s me making the same excuse” – Debbie claiming illness affected her performance against Cameron.
