One Hour/Maiden Tournament

Round 4 result:

Garvin Gray 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Tonight was a quiet night with only eight players in attendance: Andrew, Garvin, Ray, Tom, John, Cameron, Peter & James.

In the night’s only tournament game, Garvin had positional superiority in the opening playing white against the Sicilian Defence (Najdorf variation). However his advantage slipped in the middle game and a speculative counter-attack from Andrew won a piece when Garvin overlooked retreating his queen from h6 to h3. This move would have restored parity, but after the loss of the piece white’s king was opened up to a rook-queen attack and the end was fast.

Peter and James both attended tonight and were verbally advised of their tournament bans (see below). Despite this, James had an outstanding night over the board playing Tom twice in close to match conditions, drawing the first game and winning the second. Recorded for posterity, as it doesn’t happen often….  The final position in the second game: White (Tom) Kh1, Qd1, Re1 Bd2 a3 b5 c3 c5 f3 h3; Black (James) Kg8 Qg2 Ra8 Rg5 a7 b7 c7 d5 g7 h7.

Prior to James’ victory, Peter also played Tom and managed a draw. However, neither could overcome Ray who reigned supreme on his board in the corner of the room.

Suspension of Peter Hiller and James Hiller from future tournaments

Peter Hiller and James Hiller did not appear for their Round 4 games (scheduled Friday July 21) and forfeited without advising their opponents. Both are therefore removed from the One Hour tournament. The chess club's committee has also considered what sanction to impose for their repeated forfeits over recent tournaments - which cause much inconvenience and disappointment for their opponents and other club members. The decision of the committee was that Peter and James not be considered for entry to the 2006 Allegro Tournament and the 2007 Flood Cup. Peter and James have been informed of the decision and have accepted it as fair. They are still welcome to participate in all other club activities.

Quote of the night

“I think being banned has brought out the best in me” – James after an unprecedented streak of two games without defeat

“Your record in tournament play speaks for itself, then you play in virtual tournament-like conditions and…” – Andrew to James.

“No they didn’t!! They didn’t play with the clock!!!!” – Cameron interrupted.
