One Hour/Maiden Tournament

Round 4 results:

Brian Thomas 1 Marty Chadwick 0

Garvin Gray v Andrew Robinson match postponed to 28 July

Gordon Powell 0 Debbie Jenkins 1

Ray Adams ½ Cameron De Vere ½

John Curran 1 Peter Hiller 0 (on forfeit)

Shane Martin 1 Greg Colwell 0

Mark Taylor 1 Ellis Markson 0

James Hiller 0 Tim Johnson 1 (on forfeit)

The two undefeated players clashed on the top board in a typically “closed game” arm wrestle. Neither player could penetrate the other's defence well into the game with each player setting up his ammunition waiting to attack. Marty tried a move that may have been successful if attempted two or three moves earlier but was unsound and led to the loss of a piece. Brian’s win means he achieves 12 consecutive wins, including two wins from 2000 before he returned to the club this year. This run beats the previous club record of 11 wins.

Gordon came out attacking early against Deb, and after a set of exchanges went a piece down after his queen was dragged away from a vital protection post. Deb went hunting for the win and Gordon was forced to exchange his remaining pieces or become checkmated.

Ray went a pawn up early against Cameron, but it was effectively covered and was not such a decisive advantage. Later in the game, Ray gave a pawn back after a wrong rook move when in time trouble, and a draw was agreed.

Peter Hiller and James Hiller both did not appear for their games tonight. They forfeit tonight’s games and are now withdrawn from this tournament. Before entering the One Hour tournament each was advised of the consequences of non-appearance and forfeiting of a game without notifying the DOP or their opponent. The consequence advised to them was withdrawal from the tournament and a possible suspension or sanction from the club, in line with the CAQ’s policy on such matters. This special notice to them before the tournament was given due to their recidivism in such matters. The committee will soon meet to discuss this matter.

Quote of the night

“Unfortunate though it was to go a piece down, I was pleased that he didn't belt me across the park before that“ – Marty
