Round 1 results:

Peter Hiller 0 Brian Thomas 1

Tony Howes v Cameron De Vere – postponed to 16 June

John Curran 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Gordon Powell 1 Shane Martin 0

Ellis Markson 1 Ray Adams 0

Debbie Jenkins 1 Mark Taylor 0

James Hiller v Garvin Gray – postponed to 16 June

Mick Waters v Greg Colwell – postponed?

Tim Johnson 0 Marty Chadwick 1

All games went to form except for a big upset on Board 5 in which Ellis won well against Ray.

On the top board, Brian played precisely to go a pawn up at the first opportunity of counter-attack. He went on to control the dark squares thoughout the game. When Peter lost his bishop to clever fork the game was as good as over.

Mark went a pawn up during the middle stages in his game with Debbie. In attempting to maintain this advantage, Mark precipitated his own downfall. When looking to double his rooks on the pawn, his security on one rook was compromised and going only a knight down was the best he could have hoped for. Debbie played smartly in exchanging down to win comfortably in the end.

Tim made a contest of his game with Marty in the early stages and had the better of the opening. However in dealing with a counter-attack, he miscalculated and went a piece down. From this point Marty went on the extreme offensive and finished three pieces up before the game's end.
