Flood Cup
Tonight saw quite a decent turn out for an “off-night”. As well as Marty, Debbie, Cameron and Ellis showing up to play their fixtures, there was Mark, Mick, Tim, Shane, John and Peter. Michael from Spain also came to the club for the first time – he is in the Australia for one month.
Round 5 results:
Marty Chadwick 1 Cameron De Vere 0
Debbie Jenkins 1 Ellis Markson 0
Team Yamanto had a good night with two wins from two games.
Marty and Cameron’s clash was a tight game with neither player achieving any real advantage until Marty played a passive move which allowed Cameron to control the d-file with his doubled rooks. After the exchange of rooks it came down to an endgame with each player having N+5P. Cameron got his knight active sooner and won a pawn on the a-file but in doing so allowed Marty's chasing king into a stronger position. After the forced exchange of knights, Marty won back the pawn and his passed pawn provided enough of a distraction for him to win comfortably in the endgame.
The other game was also an interesting one. Ellis had many potential threats and possibilities but Debbie had them more than adequately covered. With Debbie having a knight pair to combat Ellis’ bishop pair, Debbie manouevred her pieces more effectively to find a tactical brilliancy which allowed her to gain control of the game and force checkmate half a dozen moves later.
With Marty’s win tonight, he jumps Cameron and moves to the top of the Handicap Trophy standings.

Quote of the night
I was waiting to hear checkmate!" - Michael, after watching Ellis resign in his game against Debbie. Both players were focused on Ellis about to lose his bishop rather than realising the conclusion of the game
"Who am I playing tonight?" - Tim, while setting up his board and clock in the tournament room. Tim was astonished to find that tonight was an off-week as he had not checked the website for fixtures.
