Flood Cup

Round 5 results:

Phillip Kirkman ½ Kieran Lyons ½

Marty Chadwick v Cameron De Vere (to be played Friday 28 April)

Mick Waters 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Shane Martin 0 Ray Adams 1

Garvin Gray 1 Stuart Wilson 0

Debbie Jenkins v Ellis Markson (to be played Friday 28 April)

Tim Johnson 0 Russell Lyons 1

John Curran 0 Mark Taylor 1

Brian Thomas overcame Tony Howes on the top board move to outright leadership with two rounds remaining. Defending Flood Cup champion Phil Kirkman fell another half point behind after conceding a draw to Kieran in the last game of the night to finish – a draw was agreed just after midnight. It is likely that Phil will need to win his last two games, including once against Brian, if he is to stand a chance of retaining his crown.

With games on boards 3 and 7 postponed through mutual agreement of the players to next Friday, Andrew, Ray and Garvin took the opportunity to post wins that kept them in touch with the leaders. Andrew was perhaps fortunate that Carlton was playing a Friday night AFL game as Mick seemed to be playing like he had a bus to catch – their game was the first of the night to finish with Mick’s resignation at 9:35pm.

Russell and Mark both had wins that have kept them in the running to claim, or in Mark’s case claim, the Handicap Trophy. Neither player had a straightforward game with John and Tim both having chances. This year’s Flood Cup tournament is arguably more competitive than it has been in recent years and there seem to be no easy wins.

The draw for Round 6 will occur after the two postponed games have been played on April 28.

Quote of the night

“.. must have a Hell of a digestive system!” – Phil’s comment upon hearing that Andrew’s son Thomas had ten slices of pizza in the evening following six weetbix for breakfast.
