Six games were played at the club, while two were played at players’ houses. Kieran beat her father over the board on Thursday night, while Stuart and Ellis played at Stuart’s house due to Stuart’s present temporary incapacitation. Stuart maintained his good form due plough ahead to two points from three.

Phil beat Ray to be alone at the top of the standings, at least until the postponed game between Marty and Tony is played next Friday.

Debbie and Brian were involved in an even game that turned on a small miscalculation by Debbie. This allowed Brian a

pawn up which he used this advantage in the endgame to proceed to a straightforward workmanlike victory.

Mick's game with Cameron ended a little prematurely. During the early threats and counter-threats, Mick decided to go off and grab a coffee. When he returned, he forgot that his knight was under attack from a pawn and proceeded to defend on the other side of the board. He resigned half a dozen moves later. So, as in the case of the French novelist Honoré de Balzac coffee claims another victim!

Garvin and Mark played in the far room which was once inhabited by a race of mutant aliens. However these creatures have now been eradicated and the atmosphere is now more congenial to good chess play. This game featured tactical opportunities for both parties and at one stage Mark had a strong threat happening down the centre with Garvin's pawn pinned against his king. However after the queens were exchanged, Garvin managed to organise his troops better and get in behind Mark's defensive line to eventually win a piece and the game.

John seems to still have a hangover after his year’s stint down in Melbourne. He played poorly last Friday against Stuart, and tonight put in a performance below the standard of his play in 2004. John seemed overly concerned with trying to hold on to material, even to the total detriment of his positional and counter-attacking opportunities. Andrew managed his first win of the campaign, but even from his side of the board it was a plodding performance as he allowed himself to anticipate John’s moves rather than what might have arisen from an opponent demonstrating more dynamic play.

Shane and Tim contested the most spectacular game of the night, showing that it is not necessary to limit your interest to the top board if you want to see good action. Shane went a piece down early on after backing his bishop into a corner. Tim immediately went on the hunt, but ended up giving a piece back a few moves later after a mistimed attack on Shane's queen. Then, an unnecessary Bishop sacrifice saw Tim go a further piece down. As Shane went searching for a win, Tim kept busy gobbling pawns in Shane's rearguard with Tim's knight and queen threatening should there be a lapse. However, a passed pawn proved too much to defend against and Shane rounded off a highly entertaining game with checkmate.
