On a night accompanied by the drone of hip-hop and retro blaring from the school assembly hall, white had a very good night, with no players winning with black at club premises. Stuart did mange to win with black on his home turf while James’ non-appearance (advised late Friday afternoon) meant Cameron received a free point.
Phil and Tony had expected victories, but Marty provided the upset of the night winning well and causing domestic insecurity in the process. He said the raucous kettledrums up on the hill helped him concentrate, as he was really grooving to the various favourite bands. Many complained about the noise, but Marty turned it to his advantage and later said it would have unsettled him if the music had ceased.
Garvin had QR problems and arrived over 40 minutes late, which put him behind the eight ball. Ray was able to take advantage of Garvin’s unsettled entrance to win. Ellis’ Flood debut belied his 1047 rating. He played strongly to gain the better of a draw with four time former - but most certainly not this year! - Flood cup champion.
In the other game Mark played all over Tim to gain a decisive material advantage early and win convincingly in a one sided match.
Brian had alerted the Director of Play to his absence this week on the previous Friday night and was awarded a half point bye.
James will be maintained in the tournament for now, but will be given a nil point bye in Round 3 as punishment for his late notification of his non-appearance for tonight’s Round 2 game.
