Eight of the nine first round fixtures were played tonight with one upset and other games going to form.

The award for the longest game of the night went to Cameron and Phil. Both players got down to their last fifteen minutes and Cameron was a pawn ahead at one stage but finally conceded defeat at 12:15am. In a very closed and hard-fought game, Cameron finally went a pawn up at move 36 with a R+B v R+N endgame approaching. With both players’ clocks ticking below 20 minutes, Phil managed to manoeuvre his knight around more effectively than Cameron's static bishop to cramp Cameron's king in his kingside corner and force a checkmate.

Marty played solidly throughout to capitalise on a gross miscalculation from Andrew that cost a piece. Marty game the piece back with interest ending up with a four pawn advantage and a raging queen that was able to conquer Andrew’s exposed king. This was Andrew’s first loss in the opening round of a Swiss tournament since the 1994 Handicap Tournament (and then he was in the bottom half of the draw facing Joe Tarnawski). Conversely, this was Marty’s first win in the first round, and confirms him as a serious challenger to those in the top half of the draw.

Tony went a pawn up during the opening against Shane, and after exchanging queens early on the game became open. As the game wore on Tony became the aggressor, having a forceful pawn presence in the centre. By move 28 he was 3 pawns up and held a threatening position into the endgame and Shane resigned soon after.

Against Debbie, Mark attempted a Sicilian but got himself into a cramped position early on. After losing a bishop and then a rook during the opening, resignation followed soon afterwards.

James, still seeking his first win in the Flood Cup, held his own for much of his game with Mick and actually went a pawn up at move 18 with his knight pair giving Mick cause for concern. However, the game turned on a single move and all of a sudden Mick had a passed pawn on e6 with rook and bishop in support. This threat brought on a sacrifice by James and when he went a further piece down a few moves later, the rest was a formality.

In a positional game, Tim went a piece down to the Olympic Champion at move 16 after a miscalculation. After a gross blunder at move 23, Kieran eased to a comfortable win, forcing checkmate. In another highly positional game, Ray managed to maintain control of key squares in the centre such that Stuart's usual storm down the kingside never materialised. In trying to create some attacking play, Stuart compromised his own position and that allowed Ray to expose some defensive frailties and force the errors that followed.

Ellis Markson from Sydney is a late entrant. If we have another late entrant next week then Ellis will be paired with this player. Failing this, Ellis will receive a bye in Round 1.
