Report – 17 February 2006

Without a doubt, the highlight of the night was the unexpected return of John Curran to the club after an absence of 13 months. John seems eager to get stuck in again and probably can’t wait to get his revenge against his arch-rival James. John has been playing on the Internet only during his stay in Melbourne, but his manner suggests he will now play more confidently.

On a quiet night that finished at 10.15pm (a record early close?), other attendees besides John were Stuart, Cameron, Russell and Kieran Lyons, Tony Howes (briefly), Andrew, Marty, Debbie, Mick and Tim. So the Lightning Tournament fizzles to a close, but some exciting action lies in the weeks ahead that is sure to draw higher attendances.

Lightning Tournament

Results:

Debbie Jenkins 1½ Tony Howes ½

Debbie Jenkins 1 Mick Waters 1

Unplayed fixtures:

Tony Howes v Peter Hiller

Mick Waters v Peter Hiller

Brian Willcock v Tim Johnson

Tim Johnson v Mark Taylor

Results tonight mean that Phil finishes in third place, while Debbie will finish above Tony (who will not be present next week for St David’s Day due to orienteering commitments). Phil managed to achieve third place in spite of all his whining and complaining about how he hates fast chess.

Standings are final. All unplayed games will remain unplayed as everyone has had six weeks to complete fixtures.
