Report – 3 February 2006

Tonight saw all 11 players involved in the lightning tournament attend plus Ray Adams (on a slow board in the corner) and James Hiller (back from cricket, oops I mean.. social duties and responsibilities).

16 fixtures were played tonight. 12 now remain to be played to complete the tournament.

Brian Thomas confirmed himself as favourite after an expected 2-0 victory over Tim. Andrew claimed a draw then a win over his nemesis Tony to keep alive his slight chance of retaining his title. Tony blamed his loss on the shock of discovering (during his recent holiday in the UK) that Northwich Victoria had been relegated from the Conference last season.

Debbie won 6 from 6 to stay in touch with the top four and retain an outside chance of pipping Phil who conceded an unexpected point to Peter Hiller after an illegal move in the second game. Phil blamed Harvey who didn’t show up tonight. The reason was that a QR strike caused him to spend three and a half hours on the bus getting to and from work. Phil was not happy!

There were a few surprises in other games with Marty losing twice to Tim, and Tim snatching another point off Peter. This series of events seems likely to condemn Mark to a repeat wooden spoon. Mark and Marty have been the two under-achievers of this tournament, so we can expect them to make up for this tournament in the Flood Cup!

Lightning Tournament 2006 results in detail

Harvey and James have notified that they will not be participating in this year’s lightning tournament.

Quote of the night

“The first game was won on cowardice. In the second I made a mistake when she was struggling to hang on. Basically it was decided on an illegal move” – Marty commenting on the Yamanto derby in which Debbie gained revenge for two losses in last year’s tournament.
