The Lightning Tournament is still yet to really get going with 6 of the 13 entrants yet to play a game. Serious consideration will be given to withdrawing players who have not played a game by the end of January. In effect this provides only next Friday to play games as January 27 is Prize Night.

Despite the lack of activity so far there was one big upset and almost one huge upset. Andrew is seeking his fourth consecutive Lightning Title but lost his second game to Brian Willcock. Brian had given Andrew a queen in the first game and was obviously successful this time in engendering over-confidence in his opponent. The second game started with Brian gaining a rook in the opening but not being able to save his knight in the corner. Capturing the knight left Andrew’s forces out of position and Brian exploited this well to force victory.

The huge upset that was averted was when Tim noticed that Andrew had castled into check. Unfortunately for Tim he and already moved and it was Andrew’s move so he couldn’t claim the win. As Tim was several pieces down at the time the rest of the game was a formality.

Brian won the first game against Peter with a bishop & queen aimed on h7 that Peter had overlooked until it was too late to stop without sustaining critical losses of material. The second game saw both players with Q+R+R on the board with less than ten seconds left, so it was a case of who played the clock the best, and in this instance it was Peter.

The Brian-Brian and Phil-Tim games were one sided, although the first Brian game must be one of the shortest lightning games in the history of this tournament. At move 3 Brian W moved a knight from b8 to b6 and lost when Brian T claimed an illegal move. Brian W tried to claim that Brian T didn’t really want to claim victory in such mean fashion, but Brian T claimed it anyway (as is his perfect right). Brian W didn’t quite see thing as did the independent observer and quickly fired off the following response regarding this “illegal move” incident:

“Just retained James again.

Re your Lightning report – you set on its head the debate over my illegal move. The situation was that Brian pointed out my illegal move, but for me to correct it – he did not claim a win. I wondered whether the game was nevertheless lost by me, given that he had spotted my errant move. We sought to consult the DOP who resolutely refused to attend to the matter before he had had a chat, gone to the toilet, taken a drink and rung James for the latest cricket stats. In no way at all did I seek any con.”
