The two final games to determine positions one to four commenced with the toss of a coin to determine colours. Andrew and Ray both called incorrectly, however Shane took the unusual option of electing to play with black.
Marty held an advantage through much of the Final after gaining a central pawn in the middle game. Andrew thwarted Marty’s many threats and almost collected a knight at one stage until the obvious move proved unsound. With one open rook file (the c-file) Andrew was fortunate to gain control of this, although Marty exchanged queens and rooks to neutralise any advantage and push the game towards a N+N v B+N endgame with Marty still a pawn up. Marty ran into time trouble in the endgame which resulted in passive play that allowed Andrew to wrest the initiative. With Flood Cup time controls the result would no doubt have been different!
Ray over-powered Shane to achieve third place after finishing fourth in this tournament for the past two years. Shane finished in fourth place, his highest final tournament placing to date.

Harvey won a final group game that Mark kindly agreed to play.
Shane received a free point on forfeit from his game with Harvey to propel him into the Third Place Match. Meanwhile both of Zoltan’s unplayed opponents received forfeits. This was necessary despite both players (Harvey & Zoltan) attending tonight because: (a) tonight is the final night of the year, (b) both players showed up after 8pm tonight, and (c) both players had not attended on recent Fridays.
