Debbie crushed Phil in the first game, while Phil easily won the second. However it was the first game that was crucial as this ensured that Debbie gained second place. This was her highest finish in any of the big four tournaments (Flood-Hour-Allegro-Lightning).

Ray won comfortably against Stuart playing methodically and waiting for mistakes. Andrew seemed fated to go down to Mick again, similarly to the Allegro upset of a few weeks ago. Mick was the exchange up for most of the game and had an overwhelming advantage in a rook v knight endgame. However Andrew used an old trick of blitzing which caused Mick to do likewise despite having 30 minutes left of his clock, and in this artificial time pressure Mick conceded a rook and the match to knight fork. As the youth of today would say: “a pretty lame way to lose a game”.
