Peter v Ray; Peter v Mark; Peter v Tim – all awarded 2-0 to Peter’s opponents on forfeit
Andrew’s couple of wins has resulted in him winning the Allegro title for the fourth consecutive year. Debbie’s couple of wins means that she will play off for second place with Phil next Friday.
Debbie, despite not being 100% tonight, took on Harvey and was able to win both games. In the first game she had a rook against knight in the endgame but was down several pawns. However she was able to promote a rook file pawn to achieve victory. In the second game she was a piece up early and played disciplined chess to coast to a win.
Andrew’s first game (with white) against Harvey was close until Andrew gained an advantage by snatching Harvey’s a-file pawn with Q+R+R+B v Q+R+R+N still on the board. Then he almost let Harvey back in the game with a pawn recapture with the f pawn rather than the h pawn leading to an open h file that Harvey controlled with his rook. Andrew just managed to exchange off queens to reduce the impact of this open file and force victory by pawn promotion. With this win Andrew achieved an unassailable lead at the top of the tournament standings.
The second game saw an unusual occurrence – a premature resignation from Harvey (who usually plays right down to the final checkmate). Andrew captured a pawn moving a bishop from f5 to h3. The position when Harvey resigned was:
(W: Kh1 Qb3 Rd1 Be2 Nd2 Nf3 a2 b2 d4 g2; B: Kg8 Qg3 Rc8 Rf8 Bf2 Bh3 a6 b7 e7 f7 g6 h7)
Black’s position seems impressive, but Harvey failed to see that capturing the bishop on h3 would not be immediately fatal due to …Qxh3+, 2 Nh2 Bg3, 3 Nf1 which holds it together and forces white to lose another piece. After the game the position was played out and Andrew still won (with some difficulty) with R+B v B+N+N due to the extra pawns.

Andrew Robinson 1 Tim Johnson 0
Mick Waters 0 Mark Taylor 1
Marty Chadwick 1 Stuart Wilson 0
Zoltan Vasahelki 0 Ray Adams 1
Mark had an impressive victory against Mick to set himself up for a good tournament. Marty was also playing well on the night and managed victories in social games against Debbie and Mick as well as his win against Stuart.
Zoltan Vasahelki has had trouble making it to Samford Chess Club recently, so he has decided to attend The Gap for a while. He won just about every game he played on the night (including 3 out of 3 at lightning against Andrew), but failed to win against Ray. Zoltan said he often moves too fast for his own good, so maybe he should sit on his hands more often!

Quote of the night
“I searched for ‘chess’ on the computer and hit ’do you feel lucky?’ and the computer asked me ‘Are you alone?’ so I clicked ‘yes’. Then it asked me if my wife or girlfriend was watching so I clicked ‘no’ and all of a sudden about fifty scantily dressed women, or not at all dressed ones, came up on my computer. And I had to close them all one by one.” – Harvey alerting us all to the dangers of the cyberworld (in an often recanted tale).
