Andrew won both games against Phil to wrest the top spot in the battle between the two top rated players in this tournament. Both games followed a similar pattern with Phil obtaining a spatial advantage and then making a blunder as the endgame approached. In both games Andrew had 1 to 2 minutes left while Phil had 5 to 6 minutes remaining. Game one was decided with rook and bishop on the board when Andrew’s rook (c6) pinned Phil bishop (d6) due with the king (g6). Phil moved his rook to e5, but Andrew moved his bishop to a3 capturing a piece. Game two was decided when Phil, who had white, had an overwhelming attack but overlooked a knight fork check that netted the queen.

In other results, Garvin managed only half a point from his six games. The draw was achieved in the first game with Debbie in which the tense closing stages saw Debbie make an illegal move (she missed that the queen was checking and moved her rook) – Garvin claimed the two minutes that are allowed to him under Article 7.4b from The FIDE Laws of Chess (2005 version). Then, playing with a piece up Garvin failed to capitalise on his extra time in a game that see-sawed.

Debbie won the first game against Ray with black when she managed to obtain an early passed pawn due to Ray’s misjudgement of the positional effects of a move in the middle game. This constricted Ray’s king mobility leading to his downfall. The second game was decided on a touch move where Debbie failed to observe that Ray’s king had moved which caused her Bxh7 move to lose her a queen and eventually the game. While this game was played Harvey managed to win easily over Garvin who had already played four tough games on the night. Harvey managed to be a piece up by move 15 in each game, which is usually a fatal predicament for Harvey’s opponent.

The outcome of tonight’s action is that Andrew needs to gain one more point from his two games with Harvey to win the tournament. The tournament will now conclude on November 4, and 45 Minute Tournament games can be played next Friday, as many players have finished their Allegro fixtures.
