One Hour tournament
Round 7 results:
Garvin Gray 0 Phillip Kirkman 1
Andrew Robinson 1 Stuart Wilson 0
Ray Adams ½ Tony Howes ½
Debbie Jenkins 1 Marty Chadwick 0
Harvey Quaresmini 1 Mick Waters 0
Peter Hiller ½ Mark Taylor ½
Shane Martin 1 James Hiller 0
Phil and Andrew won their respective games to jointly head the standings at the completion of seven rounds. A play-off will now occur to decide the title. Phil is soon to depart to the United States for two weeks, so the play-off will occur upon his return.
Tony’s draw with Ray ensured that he achieved third place. Ray made a claim early into the game based on a repetition of moves. Tony appeared to want to play on, but had to accede to Ray’s request after an assessment of the position.
Despite losing on the night, Garvin claimed the Maiden Trophy when the three players who could have caught up with him – Stuart, Marty and Mick – all lost.
Mick had good chances against Harvey with a queen lost but a rook and two minor pieces for compensation. Peter and Mark agreed to a draw with both playing a solid, if unspectacular game. James conceded material early to Shane and was always battling with a first innings deficit (much like his Australian heroes at present!).
All of the scheduled games were played on the night which was pleasing, and quite important for the final round of a tournament. Three players – Harvey, James and Peter were late, however all had arrived within ten minutes of the start time of 8:00pm. Generally the turn out tonight was an encouraging sign that players are heeding the start times more seriously. This trend can be attributed to a change in the culture at the club. Previously starting the clock on your opponent had been perceived as bad form. Now it is standard practice, and if exercised in combination with common sense can benefit the club.

Quote of the night
“I really didn’t want to do that” – a tearful Debbie after the game.
“At a chess club maybe we should take into account family considerations” – Ray’s response
“I DOP-ed The Gap Open in 1999 or 2000 and did manual pairings. And when I got into bother I had a committee of four to assist” – Ray Adams
(Ray was actually DOP for TGO in 1989. How many hours between rounds? – ed)
