Interclub v Northside Chess Club
Just four games were played with dual club member Mick opting for Northside. Phil won convincingly against Col Tapsall who set out at his usual lightning pace of play. However, Col soon came undone by the multiple attacking forces of the reigning Flood Cup champion, in a game played in a mood of light heartedness and jocularity.
Andrew lost a pawn to Raul in a clever sequence of moves which saw a black knight terrorise Andrew’s defences and snatch two more pawns. White got back into the game by reclaiming a piece for a further pawn, however Raul still had a distinct advantage. Then black missed a knight fork on king and rook and it was a simple mopping up operation for white to win (no time pressure on either side).
Mark won against Northside veteran Richard, while The Gap’s only setback on the night saw Mick gain revenge for his loss to Marty in the first round of the One Hour.

Round 5 results:
Debbie Jenkins 0 Tony Howes 1
Garvin Gray ½ Harvey Quaresmini ½
Suneel Prasher 0 Mark Taylor 1 (on forfeit)
Suneel announced his withdrawal from the competition to the DOP citing reasons of ill health and resultant backlog of work commitments. We hope he recovers soon and look forward to seeing him participate in future tournaments at The Gap.
Tony got himself into his usual serving of time trouble but had an extra pawn which he saw through to promotion and victory.
Garvin shortened as favourite to win the Maiden by claiming a draw against Harvey. Harvey showed up late again with less than 20 minutes of his clock at commencement. Garvin gained an exchange advantage, however Harvey fought back claiming a few pawns to have three pawns extra at one stage. Then Garvin got into time trouble and Harvey played as if it was a guillotine finish, playing the clock rather than the position on the board. This worked to Garvin’s advantage and he was able to ground the position down to a draw exchanging all the material except an unpromotable rook file pawn.
