Only four games were played tonight, and each produced a result.

Andrew played aggressively against Phil and had a strong position advantage such that most of Phil’s pieces were still on the back row in the middle game. However Andrew was unable to convert this into a decisive advantage, and Phil’s knights grabbed the centre as a furious counter-attack ensued. However just when it seemed a formality for Phil to mop up the endgame, he played a series of bizarre moves, commencing with the sacrifice of a bishop (or at the move before) until the resignation was forced. This result breathes life into the tournament, with the title still up for grabs among those who have conceded less than two points.

On other boards, Ray beat Stuart in a battle of slow attrition, after Ray swapped to advantage once a quick mate was averted by Stuart. Mick gained a two pawn advantage against Peter that he was able to hold into the endgame in which he won comfortably. James lost a piece in the opening and it was all down hill from there against Marty (especially as he showed up 15 minutes late and commenced with a time disadvantage).

The Maiden Trophy favourites now appear to be Garvin, Suneel and Mick, although it is quite possible that four points will see any of the eligible players reach a play-off. More than four points will likely win the trophy outright, but we will see…!
