In the big board one clash, Tony made a surprise blunder at move 4 which gave away a pawn. Strangely this threw Phil off his game and he played (by his own estimation) a few insipid moves until wresting control once he had moved one of Tony’s knights away from threat with a pawn move. After this Phil dominated and Tony’s attempt to regain some momentum with a bishop sacrifice on e6 was unsound.
Peter showed up for his game with Stuart when he only had 14 minutes left on his clock. He disregarded the time situation and played as if he had the full hour and lost on time after 19 moves. Stuart said he would have rather have played on, but Peter had to play another game, his Round 4 clash with Harvey. This game went 31 moves and ended with the same result, although on the board with Harvey managing to encircle Peter’s king in a position even material-wise.
Stuart’s win lifts him into the unfamiliar position of third place after four rounds.
