Report – 8 July 2005

One Hour tournament

Round 4 results:

Tony Howes ½ Andrew Robinson ½

Phillip Kirkman 1 Debbie Jenkins 0

Ray Adams ½ Garvin Gray ½

Harvey Quaresmini v Peter Hiller (postponed)

Stuart Wilson 1 Marty Chadwick 0

Mick Waters 1 Brian Willcock 0

Shane Martin 0 Suneel Prasher 1

Mark Taylor 1 James Hiller 0

Tony and Andrew played on top board and it was one of those games where, at the end, both players thought the other had better of the play. So it was probably inevitable that it would end in a draw. Both players demonstrated to the other moves that were overlooked during the game. Certainly it was an interesting game with opportunities for both sides.

Debbie had the better of her game with Phil, but fell to a swindle at the end.

Ray ended a pawn up in a rook endgame, but claimed that the ten minutes he had left was not enough to win due to the risks associated with the position.

Stuart provided an upset to win against Marty. Stuart played in his usual style and was able to capitalise on his advanced pieces when Marty had a couple of oversights. These allowed Stuart the advantage in material as well as position. Other players in contention to win the Maiden Trophy who won tonight were Mick over Brian, and Suneel over Shane.

Mark was a full piece down early against James when he allowed his knight to be trapped and must have been wondering what was going on. However James failed to capitalise in the middle game when a forced swap off of pieces would have been to his advantage. Mark ended up winning comfortably to gain his first win of the tournament.

All postponed games from Rounds 3 and 4 must be played by 15 July.
