The Howes-Kirkman clash has been postponed, so the top board tonight saw Andrew battle it out with Harvey. Unfortunately Harvey didn’t front up for combat until 8:40pm and commenced with 19 minutes left on his clock. From here the game was completed in 26 minutes with both players playing quickly until an error by Harvey at move 21 allowed a two move mate. Harvey claimed he wasn’t affected by the loss of time, however he had only used two minutes of his allotted time at the end and seemed to be playing at blitz speed.

Debbie’s game with Suneel was one of two games to go down to the wire. In time trouble Suneel allowed a fork which gave Debbie an overwhelming advantage of the exchange with momentum. Debbie looked to be taking a lot of time at the end but eventually forced a resignation with both players having little over one minute on the clock.

Ray’s victory was the most comfortable of the night and assisted by a mistake from Shane that cost him a piece.

Marty’s game with Garvin was the closest of the night. At one stage Marty had nearly ten minutes left, while Garvin was under two minutes with the position on the board even. With even pawns, Marty had rook + bishop against rook + knight. Then Marty spent quite a bit of time considering his moves. Unfortunately he didn’t take the best option of swapping off the minor pieces to gain space for his king, and then Garvin manoeuvred his rook into a threatening position. In trying to hold a pawn Marty conceded a two move mate, which was a disappointing end to the game for him. This win puts Garvin in front position for the Maiden Trophy.

Mick and James were virtually level in the middle game with Mick only a pawn up. But then, James somehow threw away two pieces. The final straw was conceding a mate in one, which handed Mick an easy win in the final analysis.

Mark was behind in his game against Brian, but then lost a bishop at move 16. Mark’s position became untenable and he resigned. It was pointed out by a few observers after the game that this may have been a hasty decision considering Brian’s penchant for piece sacs…
