James Hiller ½ point bye

This round one proved to be less predictable than that of recent Gap CC tournaments with 3 of the 7 fixtures going to the lower rated player. All games were close except one, and this exception was the game that saw Stuart’s first victory of the year.

Andrew only overcame Mark at the very end of their game, and the advantage only came to Andrew after Mark found himself in dire time trouble. Suneel also had trouble with the time controls and had held his own against the reigning Flood Cup champion for most of the game. Tony ensured that he will be in the running again with a win against Garvin that was not without its time worries for Tony.

Marty never looked threatened in his game and exploited Mick’s lack of space which was the result of lack of adventurous play by black that was necessary to break free for some sort of counterplay. Time was not an issue and both players managed their time well. Debbie looked to have an early advantage after a bishop sac on f7 with a piece to be picked up in compensation. However Shane held on well and pushed the Debbie till the end.

Brian employed his cavalier style to disastrous effect against Stuart. Piece sacrifices by Brian did not give compensation in position and at one stage both players had Q+R+R but Stuart had an extra B+N with the knight about to exchange for the rook. Interestingly, Stuart observed after the game that he was so worried about his positional discomfort that he failed to recognise that he was two pieces and the exchange ahead!!

Quote of the night

“Brian and I discovered the Van Klumff gambit about 12 years ago” – Phil informing Suneel about a momentous night some years ago in the club’s history. For the uninitiated, the Van Klumff occurs when you are in a hopeless position and you ‘accidentally’ disrupt the board, preferably by knocking over all the pieces. Fortunately this obscure gambit is rarely played in tournament play!

(See next week’s news item for an update on this quote).
