The final game of the night did not finish until 12:30am and when Ray finally conceded this match to Tony it was known that there would be a play-off against Phil Kirkman for the Flood Cup. Earlier in the night Phil had been held to a draw by Andrew in sharp play that saw chances on both sides with pawns going up opposite sides of the board. However the game ended as a forced draw with Andrew’s rook and pawn holding out against Phi’s three very advanced pawns. Then it appeared as if Tony would also concede a draw as the endgame featured opposite coloured bishops in a rook endgame. However Tony managed to turn a slight pawn advantage into an overwhelming one that outweighed Ray’s bishop’s draw prospects. A play-off will now occur next week with colours reversed from their Round 3 clash: Phil (white) v Tony (black). [History of Flood Cup Play-offs]

Mark Taylor beat Stuart Wilson in another important game – important as it decided the Handicap Trophy in Mark’s favour. Mark gained a piece advantage and it was all over from there. This result also consigned Stuart to the wooden spoon, depriving James of this implement for the first time in since 2001. Shane could have pipped Mark for the title but failed to beat Gabby who won easily in the endgame. [Handicap Trophy – Final Standings]. Brain won a close game against Marty that catapulted him to second on the final Handicap Trophy table, and also into fourth place in the Flood Cup, equalling his best efforts in 1984 and 2001.

In other games Debbie overcame James quite easily once out of the opening – it should be noted that Debbie commented that James is improving and is playing stronger openings than before. Garvin beat Mick in the remaining game to reach four points in the final standings. It should be noted that positions 3 to 9 were only separated by half a point, indicating what an even competition this year’s Flood Cup was.

History of Flood Cup Play-offs

1979 – Play-off between John Guest and Ken Bacon never occurred as the latter had to leave for London. Trophy shared.

1989 – Play-off under the arcane rules of the time stipulated that one player had to be two wins ahead. Harvey Quaresmini and George P Smith (now Flitcroft-Smith) played four games – it ended 2-2, so the trophy was again shared as the play-off was eating into the 1990 calendar.

1993 – Joe Tarnawski and Phillip Kirkman shared the trophy – no play-off regulations were in force at the time (Joe had beaten Phil in the regular tournament but had conceded two draws).

1999 – Three way play-off under new regulation introduced in 1996 (and still in effect). Mark Winn upset the form book to beat Nathan Davidson and Eddie Ottschoffski to claim the Cup.

2000 – Luke Murray and Brian Thomas finished equal first, then played a draw to share the honours

2003 – Eric Faccer beat George Flitcroft-Smith in a play-off match (Match Report)

2005 – Phil Kirkman and Tony Howes... Next week will decide!

Quote of the night

“Who’s playing the Shapelle Defence tonight?” – one pundit commenting on a new opening that was unsuccessful when last attempted.
