Tonight got off to an unusual start when we discovered that our venue had its floor covered in broken glass. This being the school holidays, it appears that vandals had senselessly smashed many of the classroom windows in D block. While sweeping up the glass it was noticed that a pigeon was trapped in one of the adjacent classrooms, which drew out strong emotions among the animal liberationists who number among the club members. At 11.30pm Debbie and Marty were still trying to rescue the bird.
Debbie moved to the top of the table with fine victory over Gabriel in the top clash of the night. The two other top-of-the-table clashes have been postponed to next Friday.
Andrew virtually lost any chance he has of retaining the Flood Cup when conceding a draw to Brian. Brian had the initiative for most of the game after Andrew played a typically poor opening. At a point where he could have grabbed the game back he offered Brian a draw which was gleefully accepted – Brian had seen a potentially winning continuation for white that Andrew had overlooked.
Mick won his first tournament game at the club with a convincing win over Shane, while Garvin benefited from Mark blundering a piece early in the opening. Mark said he still had some chances later on, but Garvin was too strong a player to fall for them. The final game for the night saw Marty win a game in which he accumulated a comfortable material advantage against Stuart.

Quote of the night
This actually was an email sent by Marty a few days before tonight’s action. Published to show that some of us actually think about what we are doing rather than showing up and pushing pieces around!
“Yep, I really need to win the next game to maintain any chance of a challenge on the Handicap. The last time I played Stuart as black I had to withstand a heavily mounted attack on the kingside and I was by no means comfortable. He used f4 early on and I've noticed he's still using it. I expect him to attack down the kingside again and bring his knight to e5 to annoy, and after the exchange I will have to move my knight off f6 which will make my defence weaker over there. I've seen that placing it on f8 is an option to protect h7. I might also bring out my light-squared bishop early on since my black defences usually block it in. I'll look to pick off his light-squared bishop since he values it, and also get the queens off the board as he likes to overuse it.
Stuart plays some good attacking chess sometimes but at other times does some howlers where he just forgets that a piece is on. I won't be hoping for this on Friday as in my last game against Mark, where I clearly didn't show his skill enough respect, after I had a few hollow stabs at an attack after the main threat was neutralised. I maintain that my form is good currently given my game against Tony and the first half of the contest versus Mark. If I play my best against Stuart then I should win, but I have to be careful as I will most likely be playing an unfamiliar line.”
An extract on an email from Marty to Andrew that reveals something of the Welsh Wizard’s character:
“You would think he would WANT that game published since getting any points off you is something of a rare event. He didn't actually say no, just didn't say yes, and didn't give us his scoresheet, though we didn't ask for it, we'd just thought he couldn't give it to us quick enough!!”
